The Relentless School Nurse: This is What School Nursing Advocacy Looks Like!

There is momentum across the country for school nurses and school nursing organizations to no longer tolerate intolerable and unsafe working conditions. Throughout COVID I have shared letters to boards of education, letters to the editor, and OpEds from colleagues around our country. Today’s message has a unique focus, it is a letter from a state school nurse organization to their members.  Doreen Crowe, President of the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization (MSNO), contacted me several weeks ago after reading Judy Doran’s guest blog about the concerns Maine school nursing were experiencing.

Here is part of Doreen’s message:

It’s only October and School Nurses are overwhelmed and above capacity. We haven’t even begun to address the looming shortage of School Nurses across the country. It’s imperative that we advocate for a sustainable action plan to maintain the health & safety of our school communities.

I invited to Doreen to write a guest blog for a view from Massachusetts school nurses. Doreen and the executive board members of MSNO penned an eye-opening letter to their membership, the school nurses of Massachusettes, and detailed the steps they have taken to advocate for them during COVID. The letter begins with a message of clarity of the enormity of the need and a call to action. I am so inspired by the steps MSNO has taken to bring the concerns of its members to the highest levels of state government. What a powerful group of school nurse leaders, who in addition to their own heavy workload, have taken on the urgent needs of their members. Be sure to read the call to action that concludes the letter, spoiler alert, here is what was written:

Please also consider joining our board and the work that we do to advocate for school nurses in Massachusetts.  It does not need to be a lot of your time, but it can be a way to transform your frustration and anger into work that makes a difference in the lives of your colleagues and your students.

To all of our MSNO Members,

The MSNO Executive Committee and Board of Directors want you to know that we are listening and have heard your concerns and frustrations through the many emails, calls and conversations. The current workload for many school nurses throughout the state is unsustainable and we are very concerned for all of you. But, while our concerns for your wellbeing are important…concern alone does not help your situation unless we do something.

This is what we are doing to bring the school nurses’ unsustainable workload to the attention of our state leadership:

We have identified the following urgent issues that need to be addressed:

These are some of the solutions we are proposing:

Please continue to bring your concerns to our attention.  You can do this by attending MSNO Regional Meet & Greets to share them with your region chairs.   You can also email us at info@msno.org, and let us know what is going on in your district.  Please also consider joining our board and the work that we do to advocate for school nurses in Massachusetts.  It does not need to be a lot of your time, but it can be a way to transform your frustration and anger into work that makes a difference in the lives of your colleagues and your students.

We are in this together,

The MSNO Executive Committee
