The Relentless School Nurse: RFK Jr. Fired the Nation’s Vaccine Experts – School Nurses Must Not Stay Silent

On June 9, 2025, something unthinkable happened. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired every single member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the very experts who shape the vaccine schedules that keep our communities healthy. The entire panel of 17 experts, gone in one stroke.

Why? RFK Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic with a long record of promoting misinformation, cited “persistent conflicts of interest” and claimed the committee had become a “rubber stamp.” But let’s be clear, this wasn’t about reform. This was about control.

Like many school nurses, I have witnessed the frontlines of vaccine advocacy and education. I’ve calmed parents’ fears, protected children from preventable disease, and built trust one immunization at a time. And now, with one sweeping decision, decades of progress and public trust are being systematically dismantled.

Why This Matters to Every School Nurse

ACIP is more than just an advisory board—it is the scientific backbone of our nation’s immunization strategy. Its transparent, evidence-based recommendations determine:

Without ACIP’s scientific rigor, we face a dangerous void, one that could quickly be filled by ideology instead of evidence.

Expert Reactions

A Frightening Precedent

Let’s be clear about what’s happening: This is not an adjustment. This is an attempted hijacking of public health policy by those who have long undermined the science behind vaccines.

RFK Jr. now has unchecked power to refill the ACIP with handpicked appointees who may reflect his views—views that are deeply out of step with the scientific consensus. A process that typically takes a year or more is now being rushed in a matter of weeks. A meeting is already scheduled for later this month.

Ripple Effects in Our Schools and Communities

As school nurses, we are bracing for the fallout:

This isn’t hypothetical—it’s already happening in communities where anti-vaccine rhetoric has taken hold. And now that rhetoric is shaping national policy.

We’ve Been Here Before—And We Know How to Respond

When COVID-19 brought fear, chaos, and division, school nurses showed up. We were the steady voices in the storm. We coordinated vaccine clinics. We fought for equity. We kept showing up, day after day.

We must show up again, because this is a five-alarm fire for public health.

What You Can Do Right Now

  1. Educate Yourself and Your Community: Stay informed with reputable sources, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Immunization Action Coalition. Understand the gravity of this shift and explain it clearly to others. I will no longer suggest the CDC as a reputable source since it is under the jurisdiction of RFK Jr.

  2. Speak Out Loudly and Often: Use your voice on social media, in professional networks, and within your communities. Write letters to the editor. Contact your legislators. Silence is complicity.

  3. Support Science-Based Advocacy Organizations: Now more than ever, we must rally around groups that defend public health and promote evidence-based policy. Donate, volunteer, and amplify their work.

  4. Demand Transparency and Accountability: Call on your elected officials to investigate this unprecedented purge and demand that new appointees be independent experts, not ideologues.

  5. Prepare for the Questions to Come: Families will be confused. They will be scared. You will be asked: What does this mean for my child? Be ready with facts, not fear.

This Is Our Moment to Lead

RFK Jr. may have fired all 17 members of the ACIP, but he cannot fire our collective commitment to truth, science, and the health of the children we serve.

As school nurses, we are trusted voices. We are advocates. We are guardians of public health. We cannot sit this one out.

Let’s raise our voices now, before preventable illness once again becomes a tragic norm. The health of our schools and our democracy depends on it.
