But what happens when the helpers are harmed?
In January 2026, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, RN, an ICU nurse, was killed during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Weeks earlier, Renée Good, a legal observer and community helper, was also killed during federal action.
These were helpers. A nurse. A legal observer. When helpers are harmed and accountability is delayed or denied, it sends a chilling message: helping is dangerous, and silence is safer.
Nurses know better. Silence does not mean nothing is wrong. Silence often means fear.
What we are asking Congress to do
- Independent investigations into all fatal encounters involving federal agents
- Full transparency, including timely release of body-camera footage
- Clear limits on militarized enforcement tactics
- Protections for civilians and healthcare workers who bear witness
