It’s here friends! The long-awaited refresh of our very own School Nursing Practice Framework™ was just released by NASN in time for School Nurses Day 2024! Take some time to digest the changes and see how the new Framework can guide our practice and educate others about the full scope of our work.
The School Nursing Practice Framework™ developed by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) is an essential tool for guiding and advancing the practice of school nursing. The updated framework, released in 2024, provides a clear and comprehensive visual representation of the key principles and activities that are central to the complex specialty of school nursing.
The Framework emphasizes evidence-based best practices and focuses on priority school nursing activities that support student health, safety, and academic readiness. It outlines the fundamental principles of professional school nursing, including care coordination, community/public health, leadership, quality improvement, and standards of practice.
The rigorous process of evaluating and updating the framework involved input from NASN’s Board of Directors, practicing school nurses, and other stakeholders. This ensured the framework remained aligned with the evolving education and healthcare landscape, equipping school nurses with the guidance needed to effectively fulfill their vital role.
The updated School Nursing Practice Framework™ features a new look and action-oriented components to help school nurses directly apply the framework’s principles in their daily practice. This includes providing tools and resources to support school nurses in using the framework when communicating with administrators, policymakers, and other education professionals.
By giving school nurses a common language and visual depiction of their complex, student-centered activities, the School Nursing Practice Framework™ has been instrumental in advancing the practice of school nursing and emphasizing the critical contributions school nurses make to supporting the health, safety, and academic success of students.
The Framework refresh was a year-long effort, with input from school nurses all over the country. There were focus groups, surveys, graphic redesigns, component format changes, framework updates, and a series of peer reviews and approvals.
What an undertaking! Diligent efforts paid off in a well-designed, thoughtfully reimagined tool with actionable steps to enhance school nursing practice.
Our own Dr. Andrea Tanner narrates a brief, but information-packed overview of the new Framework. I encourage you to watch the video, linked here, but also available on NASN’s website. One of the nuggets Andrea shared is that when you look at the graphic, imagine you are viewing it from a bird’s eye view, you will see in the upper left-hand corner the words school nurse, Now keeping in mind, the bird’s eye view, look at the graphic as if the school nurse were wrapping their arms around the principles of our Framework. You see the top of the school nurse’s head and their arms supporting the principles of our newest School Nursing Practice Framework™.
