The Relentless School Nurse: Yes, I Care for Staff Too!

I have been writing and rewriting this blog post for quite some time. The topic of caring for school staff is highly charged and debated by school nurses across the country. I wanted to weigh in on the discussion from the perspective gained as I enter my 24th year as a school nurse and 40th as a nurse.

I’ve realized that caring for staff is not just an additional responsibility, but an essential part of creating a healthy school environment. Here’s why I make it a priority to include staff care in my daily routine:

Holistic School Health
Extending our care to staff members creates a more comprehensive approach to school health. This integrated model allows for consistent health practices and a coordinated response to health challenges across our entire school community. As school nurses, we serve as an extension of community health services, bridging the gap between public health initiatives and the school environment. Our role in caring for staff contributes to a truly comprehensive health approach that benefits the entire school ecosystem, from students to teachers to administrative personnel.

Staff Wellness and Productivity
When we care for our staff, we directly contribute to their well-being and job performance. Through regular health check-ins and support, we can help detect potential issues early, manage chronic conditions, and reduce absenteeism. This proactive approach not only improves individual health outcomes but also enhances overall school productivity. By assisting staff in managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, we help prevent complications that could lead to extended absences. Moreover, our on-site care can prevent costly emergency room visits and reduce the need for staff to take time off for routine health matters, thereby minimizing disruptions to the educational process.

Enhanced School Safety
By including staff in our care, we strengthen our school’s emergency preparedness. Training staff in first aid, CPR, and health procedures ensures that our entire school community is ready to respond effectively to health emergencies. This collaborative approach is crucial in maintaining a safe environment for everyone. As often the only healthcare providers in the school setting, we play a vital role in coordinating and implementing school-wide health and safety protocols. Our expertise becomes even more critical during public health crises, where we can provide real-time guidance and support to staff, enhancing the overall safety and well-being of the school community.

Building a Supportive Community
Caring for staff fosters trust and rapport, creating a more cohesive school environment. When staff members feel supported in their health needs, they’re more likely to seek help when needed and to set positive health examples for our students. This culture of care extends beyond the walls of the nurse’s office, influencing the overall atmosphere of the school. By demonstrating our commitment to staff health, we encourage a reciprocal attitude of care and support among all members of the school community, ultimately benefiting students through improved morale and a more positive learning environment.

Professional Growth and Respect
Including staff care in our responsibilities allows us to advocate for better working conditions and professional recognition. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate the full scope of our skills and to push for the respect and resources our profession deserves. By showcasing our ability to care for the entire school population – both students and staff – we elevate the perception of school nursing as a critical component of educational success. This expanded role can lead to greater professional opportunities and recognition within the broader healthcare and educational communities.

Self-Care and Burnout Prevention
By caring for our colleagues, we create a culture of mutual support that benefits everyone, including ourselves. This approach can help prevent burnout and promote self-care among all school staff, including nurses. In fostering an environment where health and well-being are prioritized, we indirectly address our own needs as healthcare providers. The reciprocal nature of this care creates a support network that can help alleviate the stress and emotional toll often associated with our demanding roles.

Including staff care in our daily practice isn’t just about adding more tasks to our already full plates. It’s about creating a healthier, more supportive, and more effective school environment for everyone. By caring for our staff, we’re not just fulfilling our duties as nurses – we’re building a stronger, more resilient school community. We’re demonstrating the true value of school nursing as an integral part of both the educational system and the broader healthcare landscape. Through our expanded role, we contribute to the creation of comprehensive employee wellness programs, improve overall school health outcomes, and play a crucial part in fostering a culture of health that extends far beyond the school grounds.

You are the Chief Wellness Officer in your building: Remember, we are the Chief Wellness Officers (CWO)  in our buildings even if we do not have that actual title.  Until we are recognized as official CWOs, which I strongly believe is happening, let’s act as if! Leadership is action, not position! I designed CWO pins that I give away to promote the concept. If you would like one, please email your mailing address to relentlessschoolnurse@gmail.com. The only thing I ask for is the cost of postage and handling.

  1. Well said Robin…I totally agree with you (although many may not) Thanks for talking about the “elephant in the room” and starting the discussion from your perspective!
