School nurses are invited to participate in a foresight project led by Dr. Terri Hinkley, CEO of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN). This survey is part of a research project Terri is conducting for a course exploring the future of school nursing in 2050. Foresight projects use a systematic approach to anticipating and preparing for future developments and challenges.
Here is the official invitation:
I’m conducting a foresight project on the future of school nursing in 2050. I’m inviting you to participate in this survey as a school nurse with significant experience in school nursing that can inform this research project. The survey is a brief 12 question survey that should take no longer than approximately 10 minutes to complete. Your responses will be anonymous and only shared in the aggregate in a final report that I will submit to my professor and in a report to my fellow classmates. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have on this survey or my project. Please email me at thinkley@nasn.org with any questions you have. Thank you in advance for your time! – TH
Please note that the survey deadline is Sunday, October 13, 2024. Your timely response will be greatly appreciated and will contribute to this important research project. Thank you for your participation in helping to shape the future of school nursing.

I answered the 12-item survey and wanted to dive a bit deeper to consider how school nursing practice could evolve over the next 25 years. Here are my musings on what I hope our practice can be with support, funding, respect, growth opportunities, and investment in our education to sustain a healthy school nursing workforce. A big ask, I know, but doable. Think of this as a vision board for what is possible. Please add to what I most certainly left out and take a few minutes to complete Terri’s survey. Lend your voice and expertise to build a future you want to see for our profession!
By 2050, the landscape of school nursing will be transformed into an advanced hub of health and wellness, where school nurses emerge as critical leaders in both educational and healthcare ecosystems. This transformation, powered by cutting-edge technology and focusing on holistic student well-being, will profoundly redefine the school nurse’s role.
Imagine a world where health information exchanges (HIEs) seamlessly integrate schools with healthcare systems, allowing for the secure, real-time sharing of student health data. These dynamic networks will enable school nurses to provide hyper-personalized care. For example, if students are diagnosed with asthma, their school nurse will receive automated alerts from air quality sensors, wearable health monitors, and local hospitals. With just a glance at their virtual dashboard, nurses will have a complete, real-time student health profile, from their vaccination records to any recent health incidents. This connectivity will allow for immediate, data-driven interventions that ensure students receive tailored, proactive support when needed.
In 2050, school nurses will also be equipped with state-of-the-art telehealth technology. Picture virtual clinics where students can consult their nurse from the comfort of their classrooms or even from home. These immersive, AI-assisted teleconsultations will go beyond today’s video calls, leveraging augmented reality (AR) to allow nurses to guide students or teachers through real-time first-aid treatments, medication administration, or health assessments. Wearable devices, such as smart health patches and AI-driven biometric wearables, will continuously monitor student vitals like heart rate, glucose levels, and stress markers. With predictive analytics, school nurses will receive notifications of potential health risks, allowing them to prevent issues like asthma attacks, seizures, or panic episodes before they occur.
But school nursing in 2050 will go beyond responding to illnesses—it will be centered around preventive care and wellness advocacy. School nurses will lead dynamic health education programs, utilizing virtual reality (VR) to create immersive learning experiences. Imagine students virtually exploring the human body, interacting with 3D models of organs and systems, or simulating the effects of poor diet, stress, or lack of exercise on long-term health. These programs will teach students about health and inspire them to actively engage in their own wellness. Interactive VR and AR workshops on nutrition, mindfulness, physical fitness, and emotional resilience will be standard, transforming health education into a personalized, engaging experience.
Mental health will be a central pillar in this future, as collaboration with AI-enhanced mental health professionals will flourish. School nurses will regularly conduct mental health screenings using AI-driven emotional analytics, which assess student emotional states based on subtle cues in speech, behavior, and physiological data collected from wearables. With this data, school nurses will instantly connect students to virtual counseling or in-person mental health services. The 2035 nurse’s office will be a calm, supportive environment, complete with sensory-adjustable wellness spaces, where students can practice mindfulness or decompress from the demands of school.
Health equity will be a cornerstone of this future. School nurses will lead efforts to dismantle the systemic barriers that prevent many students—particularly those from underserved communities—from accessing the care they need. Mobile health units equipped with advanced diagnostic tools will travel to remote or underserved areas, ensuring that no student is left behind. These units will be staffed by nurses who can provide vaccinations, screenings, and urgent care, while AI-based translation technologies will eliminate language barriers, allowing nurses to communicate with families in any language and ensuring truly inclusive care.
Every school in the future will have a full-time nurse who is more than just a healthcare provider—they will be Chief Wellness Officers, community health champions, innovators, and trusted student advocates. With access to the latest medical technologies, data, and education tools, school nurses will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation’s health outcomes.
By 2050, school nurses will no longer be confined to the traditional “nurse’s office”—they will be integrated into a broader health ecosystem that bridges home, school, and healthcare providers. Their role will evolve into that of health leaders who nurture not only the physical health of students but also their emotional and mental well-being, paving the way for healthier, happier, and more successful lives.
