As a school nurse, I appreciate the USPS’s decision to honor healthcare workers with the “Thank You, Healthcare Community” Forever stamp, released on October 1st. It’s a meaningful recognition of our dedication, especially given our challenges in recent years. In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the USPS is honoring healthcare workers who dedicate our lives to protecting the health, safety, and well-being, often at great personal risk, with the “Thank You Healthcare Community” Forever stamp.

The tradition of commemorative stamps adds significance to this honor. These stamps have long celebrated essential aspects of American culture and history, and now healthcare workers are included in that tradition.

The healthcare community encompasses physicians, surgeons, dentists, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, lab technicians, orderlies, home health aides, hospital custodians and emergency medical workers, among others. It also includes public health professionals such as epidemiologists, microbiologists and data analysts. USPS will recognize the healthcare community, as these individuals dedicate their lives to protect our health, safety and well-being, often at great personal risk. Bryan Duefrene was the art director and stamp designer.

The design of the stamp is vibrant and meaningful, featuring health-related icons that spell out “thank you” on a clean white background. The stamp’s design features health-related icons spelling out “thank you.” The green “N” for nurses is particularly meaningful. Designed by artist Bryan Duefrene, this stamp will be issued in panes of 20 and will always hold the value of the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price. Each letter represents something special in healthcare:

  • T: A medical caduceus, a symbol of healing.
  • H: A hospital sign to guide those in need.
  • A: A microscope showcasing the science behind medicine.
  • N: A big green “N” for nurses, who are the backbone of care.
  • K: Three tan adhesive bandages for those little injuries we all face.
  • Y: A stethoscope, a staple for every doctor (and I am adding nurse!).
  • O: A heart icon with an ECG line representing life and care.
  • U: Cupped hands symbolize support and compassion.

At the bottom right, you’ll see the words “Healthcare” in gray and “Community” in surgical green, tying it all together beautifully.

The process behind selecting stamp subjects is also noteworthy. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, established in 1957, plays a crucial role in this process. They review thousands of nominations each year, ensuring that each stamp reflects something of national significance. It’s affirming to see our healthcare community recognized in this manner.

This stamp also provides an opportunity for education. You may want to create a bulletin board sharing this important recognition with your students. Use the visual to discuss different healthcare roles and emphasize the importance of gratitude for those who care for our health. It also makes a statement on any letters that you mail!

The “Thank You, Healthcare Community” Forever stamp is more than just postage; it represents recognition for our contributions as healthcare workers. Whether in schools, hospitals, or clinics, we all play a vital role in supporting community health. I am grateful to the USPS for this acknowledgment and for including us in this honored tradition.
