The documentary “Run, Hide, Fight: Growing Up Under the Gun,” produced by PBS News Student Reporting Labs, explores the profound impact of gun violence on young people and their communities. Featuring stories from 14 student journalists across five U.S. cities—Philadelphia, Oakland, Washington D.C., Nashville, and East Lansing, Michigan—the 30-minute documentary highlights the alarming reality that gun violence is the leading cause of death for American children and teens, according to the CDC.
The documentary delves into the mental health effects of this crisis, revealing that half of 14 to 17-year-olds in the U.S. worry about school shootings, with nearly six in ten contemplating what would happen if a person with a gun entered their school. Student producer Ethan Rodriguez from Philadelphia reflects on how the project allowed him to raise awareness about these ongoing issues and the shared experiences of his peers.
By centering youth perspectives, “Run, Hide, Fight” sheds light on survivors’ trauma and emphasizes how young people are coming together to advocate for change. The film serves as a vital contribution to the national conversation about gun violence and potential solutions, showcasing the resilience and activism of a generation determined to create a safer future.
