The Relentless School Nurse: A Prescription for America – Choose Community

Today, we are faced with a profound choice: do we continue with the status quo, marked by pain, disconnection, and division? Or do we choose a different path—one of joy, health, and fulfillment, where we turn toward each other instead of away from each other; where we choose love over fear; where we recognize community as the irreplaceable foundation for our well-being? As I finish my tenure as Surgeon General, this is my parting prescription, my final wish for all of us: choose community. – U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy

Dr. Vivek Murthy concluded his tenure as the 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States on January 7, 2025, he leaves behind a powerful and thought-provoking “Prescription for America”. This document, more than a traditional scientific report, is a deeply personal reflection on the state of health and well-being in the United States, drawing from Dr. Murthy’s extensive experiences over the past decade as the nation’s top doctor.

Dr. Murthy’s parting message centers on a critical observation: the erosion of community in America is fueling a spiritual crisis that threatens our fundamental well-being. He identifies three core elements that make community possible: relationships, service, and purpose. These elements, underpinned by the core virtue of love, form what Dr. Murthy calls the “triad of fulfillment,” contrasting it with the modern “triad of success” (wealth, fame, and power).

As school nurses, we are uniquely positioned to implement this “triad of fulfillment” within our educational environments. Here’s how we can integrate these principles into our professional practice:

Cultivating Relationships

Enhance visibility and accessibility throughout the school. Engage with students, staff, and faculty beyond the health office. Participate in classroom activities, staff meetings, and online platforms to foster connections and trust.

Expanding Service Through Education

Leverage expertise to educate the school community on health and wellness topics. Develop comprehensive health education programs, contribute to newsletters, and utilize social media channels to disseminate valuable health information. Consider initiating a “Health and Wellness Series” for parents and staff to address pertinent issues.

Collaborative Partnerships

Forge strong partnerships with teachers, administrators, local healthcare providers, and community organizations. These collaborations can enhance the scope and effectiveness of health initiatives, demonstrating the integral role of school nursing in community well-being.

Quantifying Impact

Implement robust data collection and analysis practices to document intervention outcomes. This evidence-based approach validates the importance of school nursing and provides a foundation for advocating for additional resources and support.

Community Engagement

Develop initiatives that actively involve students, families, and staff in health and wellness programs. Consider establishing a school wellness committee or organizing health-focused events that promote community participation and shared purpose.

The Surgeon General’s prescription is not just a diagnosis of societal ills but a call to action. It challenges Americans to prioritize building and nurturing community as a fundamental aspect of health and fulfillment. Dr. Murthy argues that by focusing on relationships, service, and purpose, individuals and society as a whole can address the gnawing sense of emptiness and disconnection that plagues many Americans today.

As school nurses, we have the opportunity to embody Dr. Murthy’s vision by serving as catalysts for community building within our educational institutions. By focusing on relationships, service, and purpose, we can significantly contribute to the overall health and well-being of our school communities.

This document serves as both a reflection on Dr. Murthy’s tenure and a roadmap for a healthier, more fulfilled America. It invites us to reconsider our priorities and the true sources of well-being in an increasingly disconnected world. Through our roles as school nurses, we can play a crucial part in realizing this vision and creating more connected, healthier school communities.
