The Relentless School Nurse: Firearms First, Public Safety Last

President Trump’s recent executive order on Second Amendment rights is a reckless and dangerous move that prioritizes gun ownership over public safety. Signed on February 7, 2025, this order blatantly disregards the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in America, particularly its devastating impact on our youth.

The timing of this order is appalling. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teenagers in the United States, rising more than 50% in recent years. Yet, the administration chooses to focus on protecting gun rights, already enshrined in the Constitution, rather than addressing this crisis. This decision shows a callous disregard for the lives of young Americans and the safety of our communities.

The order’s sweeping scope is particularly alarming. It directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to conduct a comprehensive review of all federal firearms-related actions from January 2021 through January 2025, with the clear intent of dismantling gun safety measures implemented during the Biden administration. This includes potentially rolling back crucial regulations on ghost guns, expanded background checks, and stricter oversight of gun dealers – all measures designed to keep firearms out of dangerous hands.

This executive order brazenly ignores the U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory that gun violence is a public health emergency. By disregarding expert medical opinion, the administration demonstrates a willful ignorance of the severe health consequences of gun violence on our society.

The potential impact on school safety is equally concerning. This order could lead to the dismantling of important initiatives aimed at protecting students. The Federal School Safety Clearinghouse External Advisory Board, created after the Parkland school shooting, has already been eliminated. At a time when school shootings continue to traumatize communities across the nation, weakening these protections is nothing short of irresponsible.

This is a dangerous step backward in the fight against gun violence. It prioritizes an extreme interpretation of the Second Amendment over the safety and well-being of American citizens, particularly our children. This action not only fails to address the real issues at the heart of America’s gun violence crisis but actively works to undermine the progress made in recent years to protect our communities.

  1. This is incredibly dangerous. Going to have to add to my list of what to contact legislators about. Do you all know the average number of calls to lawmakers pre Trump 2.0 was 40/minute. Yesterday it was reported that they are coming in at 1600/minute. So keep up the work! Keep up the pressure!
