Allie’s message posted on Instagram applies to many issues our country is facing today. I am sharing her words in the hope that spreading light will also create clarity. There really is no “other” in this life. Our actions and our inactions have consequences. Here is to a 2020 filled with intention, connection, and finding common ground.
My favorite sight of the year, a fully lit menorah. We place our menorah on our fireplace mantle in front of the mirror so it can reflect through the windows across the room. This is our 5th Hanukkah in this home in Spencer, a place that I’ve grown to love in spite of likely being the only Jewish person in town. I have never experienced outright malicious anti-Semitism living here, but have witnessed micro aggressions and a fair amount of ignorance about what it really means to be Jewish. The visible rise in violent acts of anti-Semitism has the hair standing up on the back of my neck.
If you have a Jewish person in your life, check in with them. Ask them how they’re feeling, offer an open ear and heart. Educate yourself on what’s happening locally and globally to the Jewish population. Don’t make assumptions. Don’t feed into the stereotypes and the conspiracy theories. It’s time to examine whatever beliefs you have, and to start developing an understanding about why we are so scared.
But don’t mistake our fear for weakness, we WILL survive. We will, because we always have. We will continue to be a light in the darkest of days.
