The Relentless School Nurse: The Stark Reality of Pandemic School Nursing Featured in The New York Times

I am proud to be one of the nurses interviewed by Emily Anthes for this New York Times article about pandemic school nursing. Our collective voices from school nurses across the country illustrate the epic challenges we have endured throughout the pandemic. The toll has been heavy and healing seems tenuous, but one day this will be in our rearview mirror. It’s just not today, and so we need to support one another.  We can find ways to regain our equilibrium as we relentlessly advocate for the health and safety of our students and staff, even amidst community opposition to public health mitigation strategies. 

Throughout the pandemic, schools have been flash points, the source of heated debates over the threat the virus poses and the best way to combat it. School nurses are on the front lines. They play a crucial role in keeping schools open and students safe but have found themselves under fire for enforcing public health rules that they did not make and cannot change.
