The Relentless School Nurse: Two School Nurses Responsible for 17 Campuses Speak Out!

Two school nurses and three health technicians from the Morongo Unified School District recently addressed the board of education, shedding light on the challenges they face in providing safe and adequate care to students. Nurse Aryn Jensen expressed her concerns about her overwhelming workload, being responsible for over 4,000 students. This plea for support and change underscores school nurses’ critical role in advocating for improved school health services.

I wake up most days feeling continually set up to fail. – Nurse Jensen

Jensen’s testimony highlighted the urgent need for a complete department restructuring to ensure student safety and well-being. She emphasized the necessity of having a school nurse director at the district level to address outdated policies and implement standardized training. The call for change was repeated by health technicians who emphasized the need for more trained staff and substitutes to meet the health needs of students across multiple campuses.

The importance of school nurses speaking at board meetings cannot be understated. Their voices serve as a vital link between frontline healthcare workers and decision-makers, advocating for resources, staffing improvements, and policy changes that directly impact student health. By sharing their experiences and challenges directly with the board of education, school nurses like Jensen and her colleagues bring attention to critical issues that affect not only their ability to provide care but also the overall well-being of students in the district.

In a system where student health is paramount to academic success, the advocacy efforts of school nurses play a pivotal role in driving positive change, ensuring that students receive the quality care they deserve. Their courage in speaking up amplifies the importance of investing in health services within schools, ultimately creating a safer and healthier environment where students can flourish and learn effectively.

How many of us feel like Nurse Jensen, set up to fail? We have to ask for what we need and speak directly to the decision-makers with data, stories, and solutions! We can do this, and I am committed to spotlighting examples of advocacy that serve as examples for all of us.
