The Relentless School Nurse: It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way, But What Do We Do to Stop It?

A new school year begins with another school shooting. It doesn’t have to be this way, yet time after time, the same scenario is repeated in schools across the country. The numbers are mounting at an accelerated rate, with school shootings markedly increasing in 2021 through today. According to David Riedman, the data scientist and creator of the K12 School Shooting Database, “2024 is on pace to exceed the record number of shootings in 2023.”

Despite the devastating toll gun violence takes on young lives, we have yet to take significant steps to change the tragic reality of school shootings. The lack of action speaks to a failure of our collective will to protect the most vulnerable among us. Without urgent reform, the cycle of inaction and preventable deaths will continue.

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, yet meaningful action to address this crisis remains elusive. The political landscape is deeply polarized, with efforts to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation repeatedly stalling due to gridlock and the powerful influence of special interest groups like the National Rifle Association. These organizations wield considerable power over lawmakers, opposing even modest reforms that could save lives. The debate is further complicated by interpretations of the Second Amendment, with some viewing it as a constitutional barrier to almost any form of gun regulation. Legal challenges against proposed gun safety laws continue to slow progress.

But tonight, I am thinking about my colleagues in Georgia. My school nursing heart is broken for another school community that has to endure the trauma of a predictable and preventable tragedy due to inaction and abject disregard for the well-being of our children and teens. Schools were once safe havens for our students. What we have allowed to happen due to complete disregard for the public safety of school communities is unconscionable and devastating.

I ask everyone to read the compelling post by David Riedman, linked below. The rinse and repeat of school gun violence is a pattern that David has meticulously researched. There are answers, actions, and evidence-based solutions to this public health crisis. The question that remains is when we will, as a nation, take collective, meaningful action to protect our children.

Apalachee High follows the same patterns as hundreds of other school shootings by David Riedman

  1. Heart breaking. In the context of your second to last line about answers, actions and evidence based solutions, the questions of how can this happen, why, why here, what is happening become hollow. We all know the answers, we just cannot yet for the reasons you listed take the collective action to protect our children. It is an excruciating cycle. So damaging.

    1. I know you feel this deeply Judy. I always appreciate your reflections.

  2. Thank you Robin for continuing to talk about the gun violence epidemic in America. In this critical and consequential election year it is incumbent on us as nurses to be informed, speak out and vote accordingly.

  3. Thank you for continuing to elevate this crisis among school nurses. We need broad based support for common sense, public health solutions.
It does not need to be this way!
