The Relentless School Nurse: The Gun Safety Election – Progress or Reversal, Your Vote Decides

In just hours, Americans will make a pivotal choice that could determine the future of gun violence prevention in our nation. The stakes are stark: gun violence ranks as the third most pressing issue for voters and stands as the leading cause of death for children and teens in our country.

But while more than 90% of Americans want stronger gun laws, like expanding Brady Background Checks to all gun sales, we cannot enact sensible solutions without first electing leaders who prioritize action to address this uniquely American crisis. – Brady United Against Gun Violence

Progress at Risk

The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, established in September 2023, has been a game-changer in coordinating nationwide efforts to reduce gun violence. Vice President Kamala Harris has led the office since its inception. This first-ever federal office has already made significant strides, implementing crucial initiatives like the Safer States Agenda and expanding partnerships with local communities. We cannot afford to let this vital office close.

The Biden-Harris administration has demonstrated an unprecedented commitment to common-sense gun reform, ushering in transformative policies to address America’s gun violence crisis. Most notably, the administration supported the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most comprehensive federal gun violence prevention policy since the Brady Bill nearly 30 years ago. This landmark legislation, championed with bipartisan support, marks a significant step toward enhancing community safety and strengthening gun regulations.

Key initiatives include confirming a permanent director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for the first time in seven years, investing in community violence intervention programs, and actively supporting policies to curb firearm-related harm nationwide.

These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to gun safety, aimed at reducing gun-related deaths, supporting communities impacted by violence, and strengthening America’s resolve to address this pressing issue with evidence-based solutions.

Critical Choice

The contrast in approaches is clear. While current leadership has established unprecedented federal support for gun violence prevention, the opposition candidates have characterized school shootings as “facts of life” and suggested that stronger doors are the solution. The National Rifle Association has endorsed candidates who oppose most gun-safety laws, including assault weapons bans and red-flag laws.

Young voters, who have grown up in the era of school lockdowns and active shooter drills, are particularly energized about this issue. Recent polling shows overwhelming support for common-sense measures: 79% support raising the minimum age for gun purchases to 21.

The future of gun violence prevention hangs in the balance. Your vote will determine whether we continue making progress or reverse course on these vital safety measures. We cannot let the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention close. This election is our chance to ensure that this crucial work continues and expands, making our communities safer for everyone.

Champions for Change

A new wave of leaders committed to gun safety is emerging across the nation, from trauma surgeons to civil rights advocates. These candidates are dedicated to enacting policies such as universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders. Their diverse experiences bring fresh perspectives to a movement increasingly recognized as a public health priority.

The continuation of essential initiatives, including the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, depends on the choices made in this election. Every vote will help determine whether the U.S. moves forward with evidence-based solutions to curb gun violence or reverses course on the progress achieved so far. As voters across America head to the polls, the stakes couldn’t be higher in the effort to build a safer, more responsible future.
