Healing Politics, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, is dedicated to empowering nurses and midwives to engage in civic leadership and run for elected office. Their flagship program, the Healing Politics Campaign School for Nurses & Midwives, will take place from July 24th – 27th, 2025 at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy in Durham, NC. This comprehensive 2.5-day program is designed to equip nurses and midwives with the skills necessary to pursue political careers.
The program is structured into three phases:
-
Virtual pre-sessions are held prior to the main event to address initial questions, introduce fundraising strategies, and help attendees prepare to get the most out of the Campaign School.
- The main event, July 24 – 27, 2025, in-person workshops, lectures, and role-playing exercises.
- A post-session virtual meeting four weeks later to provide continued guidance and resolve challenges.
Participants will delve into campaign strategy, media engagement, effective communication, and more, learning directly from experienced nurse legislators through interactive, hands-on training. The curriculum includes critical topics such as campaign planning, fundraising, communication skills, voter outreach, and understanding political landscapes.

By addressing the underrepresentation of nurses and midwives in political office, the Healing Politics Campaign School seeks to increase nursing expertise in policy-making, foster civic engagement within the profession, and inspire participants to shape legislation that reflects the realities of healthcare delivery. Campaign School is open for registration!
Nobody knows our story like we do. Nobody can tell our story like we do. – North Carolina State Senator, Gale Adcock (2023 Campaign School mentor/speaker, and N.C. nurse legislator)
We cannot overstate the importance of nurses taking an active role in shaping health policies that impact our field. Healing Politics is bridging the gap between healthcare expertise and political representation, empowering nurses and midwives to become effective leaders in the political arena. As they say on their website:

Applications for the 2025 Healing Politics Campaign School for Nurses & Midwives are now open!
Here is a wonderful story about Maureen Hall, a school nurse from Alaska who attended last summer’s Campaign School and decided to run for office and she WON! This was posted on Healing Politics LinkedIn profile.

As the countdown to the Presidential election continues, we are thrilled to celebrate the results of an election earlier this month: Kudos to Maureen Hall, elected to the Juneau City Assembly!
Maureen attended the 2024 Healing Politics Campaign School in June, initially planning a run for statewide office a couple of years out. But when she returned home, she decided to retire from her 17 year career as a school nurse and filed a letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission to run for the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly. Within days, her treasurer was on board, she got photos taken and a website set up, and turned to her network. And on October 21st, she was sworn in to the Juneau Assembly!
We can’t wait to see what you do, Maureen, as you pursue your passion, “which is to go upstream to address childhood trauma.” Congratulations!
Aren’t school nurses amazing?! We are inspired, Maureen!!
