The Relentless School Nurse: On My Mind – Trump’s Undoing of Gun Safety Efforts

Trump’s intention to overturn recent advancements in gun policy has been on my mind since the election. The 2024 election results present a significant challenge for the gun violence prevention movement. With Donald Trump returning to the presidency, federal priorities are shifting dramatically. He has vowed to dismantle the initiatives established during the Biden administration, signaling a major reversal of efforts aimed at reducing gun violence.

The incoming administration is expected to roll back key components of recent gun safety measures. Trump has pledged to “reverse every Biden attack on the Second Amendment” and intends to review and potentially dismantle parts of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Additionally, advancing a nationwide concealed carry reciprocity law is a top priority, which could undermine state-level gun regulations and create legal challenges over jurisdictional authority.

State-Level Progress and Resilience

Despite these federal challenges, 2024 has seen remarkable advancements in state-led gun violence prevention. States such as Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, and Vermont have enacted stronger gun laws, including universal background checks, bans on assault weapons, and secure firearm storage requirements. Virginia has also made notable progress, with multiple gun violence prevention bills advancing this year. These state-level actions demonstrate a growing commitment to addressing gun violence, often supported by bipartisan efforts.

Advocacy and Community-Based Solutions

Gun violence prevention organizations remain steadfast in their mission. Groups like GiffordsEverytown for Gun Safety (Everytown), and Brady United Against Gun Violence (Brady) have committed to intensifying their efforts, while state legislatures collectively passed over 60 gun safety measures in 2024. The focus on community-based solutions and violence intervention programs has proven to be a resilient strategy, empowering local advocates to drive meaningful change.

The Role of the Medical Community

Brady’s This is Our Lane Advisory Council continues to play a pivotal role in the gun safety movement. Bringing together healthcare professionals to advocate for evidence-based policies, the council amplifies the medical community’s voice in addressing the public health crisis of gun violence.  The Council’s expertise and dedication are essential in navigating the challenges posed by potential federal policy reversals.

A Collaborative Path Forward

The coming years will demand strategic partnerships and unwavering advocacy to preserve and expand progress in gun safety. The movement’s resilience, coupled with increasing public support for common-sense gun laws, offers hope for continued advancements. Brady’s This is Our Lane Advisory Council will remain a cornerstone of these efforts, ensuring that healthcare professionals remain at the forefront of the fight to prevent gun violence and shape a safer, healthier future for all Americans.

School nurses need to keep a bright light shining on gun violence issues along with school based vaccine mandates. Children deserve so much better than this .
