The Relentless School Nurse: The Time to Act is NOW!

This blog post is a follow-up to the November ask by  Judy Doran, the 2023 Maine School Nurse of the Year, because time is of the essence!

The Relentless School Nurse: Asking For a Friend…Will You Help End “Social InSecurity?”

Repeal Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), and Government Pension Offset (GPO). The clock is ticking and we need the Senate vote this week. Please contact your Senators AND Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. IYKYK if not here’s a quick read – Judy Doran, Maine school nurse (retired)
The Social Security Fairness Act is on the verge of a critical Senate vote that could expand benefits for nearly 3 million Americans, particularly public servants like nurses, firefighters, teachers, police officers, and postal workers.

The bill aims to eliminate two problematic provisions – the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) – which currently reduce Social Security benefits for many public service workers. These provisions have been preventing millions of dedicated public servants from receiving their full-earned Social Security benefits.

How to Take Action – If you want to support this legislation, here are steps you can take:
  1. Contact Your Senator
  • Call the congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121
  • Ask your Senator to vote YES on the Social Security Fairness Act
  • Emphasize the importance of supporting public service workers
  1. Share Personal Stories
  • If you or someone you know is affected by WEP and GPO, share your experience
  • Highlight the financial hardship these provisions cause
  1. Spread Awareness
  • Discuss the bill with friends, family, and colleagues
  • Share information on social media about the potential impact
The bill has strong bipartisan support, passing the House with a 327-75 vote. However, it still needs at least 60 Senate votes to move forward. With the current congressional session ending soon, time is of the essence. If the Senate does not pass this bill by December 31st, it will die. They are leaving for their break on Friday, December 20th, we only have this week!

Key Details
  • Affects approximately 2.8 million Americans
  • Would restore full Social Security benefits to public service workers
  • The deadline for action is approaching quickly,
Take action now to support this critical legislation for public service workers, including school nurses!

  1. THANK YOU!!!! Folks it is GO TIME. If you are not sure about what we are talking about here and way to busy to research it I absolutely get it. This may be contrary to Robin’s message on Truth Decay (fact checking, etc……..) but I’m asking you to please just trust me and call your Senator to get this passed this week.Millions of hard working Americans including school nurses and educators in 15 states depend on this repeal to restore the dignity and fairness in their retirement that they have worked very hard for. Y’all know how hard they have worked and Friday is coming up. We need this to get to the Senate Floor for a vote this week. Thanks!!!!
