The Relentless School Nurse: Finally Time to Celebrate, the Social Security Fairness Act Passed!

“The Senate finally corrects a 50-year mistake,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer

It happened, the Social Security Fairness Act was finally passed in a nail-biting, 11th-hour vote in the Senate late last night! It is a huge win for millions of public service workers—and it’s especially meaningful for school nurses who have been fighting for this change for fifty years. After decades of hard work, this landmark legislation finally removes two federal policies that have kept nearly 3 million people, including police officers, firefighters, postal workers, teachers, and school nurses, from receiving the full Social Security benefits they’ve earned.

This victory is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people unite and fight for what’s right. School nurses, along with educators and other public servants, played a crucial role in pushing for this change. After making countless calls, writing letters, lobbying lawmakers, sharing personal stories, and participating in rallies and press conferences—all to shed light on the unfairness of these policies—advocates dedication and perseverance have finally paid off.

The National Education Association (NEA), which represents over 3 million members, including school nurses, was at the heart of this effort. NEA members made nearly half a million calls and sent emails to Congress, demanding that these laws be repealed. Their hard work, year after year, has finally resulted in this historic win.

For school nurses and other public service workers, this news is life-changing. Many have lost out on significant benefits due to these unfair laws. Now, with the provisions repealed, those lost earned benefits will be restored, and the whole field of public service, including school nursing, will be more appealing to new recruits and those looking to stay in the profession.

This achievement shows what we can accomplish when we come together. By sharing your stories and standing united, school nurses, have helped create a change that will benefit millions of public employees. The Social Security Fairness Act isn’t just another law—it’s a powerful reminder that passion, action, and determination can lead to real, lasting change.

I live and work in New Jersey, and while this victory may not directly impact my state, I am deeply moved by the positive results of collective action. I want to take a moment to publicly thank Judy Doran, the 2023 Maine School Nurse of the Year, for bringing this important issue to my attention. As a regular contributor to The Relentless School Nurse, Judy’s dedication to advocating for her fellow nurses has been inspiring. Over the past month, sharing her calls to action and the thoughtful, passionate responses from readers has reinforced just how impactful our voices can be when we stand together. Judy’s leadership and the engagement of those who have joined the fight are a testament to the power of collaboration—and a reminder that change happens when we all work toward a common goal.
