The Relentless School Nurse: Voices Silenced, Futures Threatened – The Crisis at the U.S. Department of Education

I am sounding the alarm on a deeply troubling development within our nation’s Department of Education. In a move that strikes at the heart of our public education system, dozens of dedicated civil servants have been abruptly placed on administrative leave, their access to work emails suddenly cut off.

This isn’t just another policy shift – it’s a direct assault on the very people who work tirelessly to ensure our children receive quality education. At least 55 employees, ranging from senior civil rights attorneys to program analysts and loan regulators, found themselves locked out of their accounts on a Friday evening. These are not just numbers; they’re real people with families, mortgages, and a deep commitment to serving our nation’s students.

What’s particularly alarming is the seemingly arbitrary nature of these actions. Many of the affected employees had minimal if any, connection to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Their only “offense” appears to be participating in a voluntary training program that was actively encouraged during previous administrations.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about streamlining government or cutting costs. It’s about dismantling the infrastructure that supports our public education system. These employees are the backbone of programs that distribute billions of dollars to K-12 schools, enforce civil rights laws, and manage critical functions like federal student loans and special education accommodations.

As school nurses, we understand the importance of a well-functioning education system. We see firsthand how policies and programs implemented at the federal level trickle down to impact our students’ daily lives. By sidelining these dedicated professionals, we’re not just disrupting their careers – we’re potentially jeopardizing the support and resources our schools desperately need.

This is a wake-up call, my friends. We must be relentless in our advocacy for our students, our schools, and the dedicated professionals who make our education system work. We cannot stand idly by as the very foundation of public education is eroded.

It’s time to raise our voices, to demand transparency, and to fight for the reinstatement of these civil servants. Because if we don’t stand up for them now, who will be left to stand up for our students when they come for our schools next?

The potential dismantling of the Department of Education would be catastrophic. Title I funding for high-poverty schools? Gone. Special education protections? Weakened. The $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt? In chaos. This isn’t just about education – it’s about the health, safety, and future of every child in America.

But here’s the thing: we’re not powerless. We’re school nurses – we’re relentless by nature. And now, more than ever, we need to harness that spirit for collective action.

Here are the four most impactful actions we can take:
  1. Educate and inform: Stay up-to-date on proposed changes and their potential impacts. Share this information with colleagues, parents, and community members through newsletters, social media, and school events. Knowledge is power, and an informed community is our first line of defense.
  2. Engage with decision-makers: Write letters, make phone calls, and send emails to your representatives at local, state, and federal levels. Attend town halls and community meetings. Make it clear that dismantling public education is unacceptable and explain the real-world consequences for our students and communities.
  3. Build coalitions: Partner with teachers’ unions, parent-teacher associations, and student groups. Our collective voice is stronger than individual efforts. Organize regular meetings to strategize and coordinate actions. Remember, we’re all in this together for the sake of our students.
  4. Amplify our message: Use your professional networks and social media platforms to spread awareness and rally support. Share stories that illustrate the vital role of public education and school health services. Encourage others to join the cause and take action. Be the spark that ignites a movement.
Remember, we are on the front lines of this battle. Our students’ health, safety, and futures are at stake. This is our call to action. Let’s answer it with the same unwavering commitment we bring to our students every day. Together, we can be an unstoppable force for change. Let’s show them what it truly means to be relentless.

  1. No one is coming to save us.
We have to , as citizens take our Constitutional obligation in hand … to defend our republic that is now under threat by a would be king.
That means daily calls to representatives. Attend all the upcoming rallies and marches.
Like John Lewis said “ Good Trouble, necessary trouble”
My husband and I are off to the Treasury Department rally today.

    1. I agree with you 100%, please let me know how the rally was! Thank you for all you are doing!
