The Relentless School Nurse: Take Action to STOP the Dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education

The dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education is facing a two-pronged assault from both the Executive and Legislative branches of government. President Trump’s campaign promise to close the Department is now being echoed in Congress, with Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie’s reintroduction of H.R. 899, a one-sentence bill proposing to abolish the federal Department of Education by December 31, 2026.

H.R. 899 is one sentence long:

The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2026.

This coordinated effort presents an unprecedented threat to the future of federal education policy and funding in our country. The Trump administration has begun drafting an executive order to initiate the process of eliminating the Department of Education, while simultaneously advocating for legislative action from Congress to formally abolish the department.

We must unite against this threat to our education system. Our students’ health, well-being, and future depend on our relentless advocacy and action. Let’s make our voices heard and fight for the continuation of vital federal support for education and school health services.

“Vote NO on H.R. 899 – The petition to Protect the Department of Education” reads as follows:

I am urging you to vote NO on H.R. 899, the reckless bill sponsored by Rep. Thomas Massie to terminate the Department of Education. This is a dangerous, shortsighted, and purely ideological attack on our nation’s education system at a time when our focus should be on protecting our democratic institutions from collapse. The Republican Party has already thrown our nation into a constitutional crisis and is dismantling key institutions at an alarming pace. Their focus should be on removing Donald Trump from power, not gutting one of the most critical departments that ensures access to education for millions of Americans.

The Department of Education, a legacy of the late President Jimmy Carter, has done more good than harm by ensuring equal educational opportunities, federal student aid, and protections for students with disabilities. This attempt to abolish it is nothing more than another power grab, designed to shift control to states in ways that will harm students, defund schools, and worsen educational inequality.

Republicans have claimed they want states’ rights on issues like Roe v. Wade, yet they have no problem introducing national legislation that overrides states’ rights when it suits their agenda—such as attempting to implement a nationwide abortion ban. This hypocrisy proves they are untrustworthy, and their push to eliminate the Department of Education is nothing more than an ideologically driven attack on public education that will harm students, teachers, and the future of this country.

Education is a fundamental right. Destroying this department will weaken our workforce, threaten our economic stability, and set future generations up for failure. I expect you to stand up against this thoughtless, reckless, and unconstitutional attempt to dismantle one of the most essential federal agencies. Please do the right thing and vote NO on H.R. 899.
