I’m so grateful to Robin for inviting me to share my career journey with the Relentless School Nurse readers. She’s built a community where school nurses’ healing hands cultivate knowledge, empathy blooms into understanding, and collective wisdom grows healthier school communities.

My name is Jill Yacu, and for nearly two decades, I’ve been wielding a stethoscope and doing my best to spread smiles in various healthcare settings as a registered nurse. My nursing adventure has been as diverse and unpredictable as the patients I’ve cared for—a career that’s been equal parts challenging, rewarding, and a passport to unforeseen opportunities. From scrubbing into neurosurgeries in the operating room, recovering kids in a pediatric PACU, to corporate wellness at JPMorgan Chase, and triage in an outpatient peds clinic, my path was already a bit of a wild ride before I took a job as a school nurse at an independent school in Chicago.

In this role, as a school nurse for grades 5 – 12, I stumbled upon an unexpected truth: school nursing is really hard! It is both an immense responsibility and privilege to be the health anchor for an entire school community – balancing acute care, preventive health, emotional support, and educational continuity in a job that demands equal parts nursing care, medical expertise, MacGyver skills, and seemingly unlimited amounts of flexibility, patience, and compassion. This school nursing experience, more than any other, brought together my diverse experiences in clinical care, health education, and wellness, allowing me to see my work’s direct impact on the lives of students and the broader school community.

Just when I thought I’d seen it all in school nursing, 2020 unleashed a challenge that would push us all to our limits and beyond: the COVID pandemic. This unprecedented crisis stripped bare a stark reality that has been true for a very long time: school nurses are the unsung linchpins of educational communities, yet they operate in a landscape of glaring contradictions. On the one hand, their work is indispensable – safeguarding student and staff health, shaping community-wide health outcomes, and often serving as the first line of defense against public health threats. On the other hand, they face a chronic shortage of resources, support, and recognition that borders on the systemic.

This realization ignited a desire to leverage my knowledge, skills, and experience to advocate for and support school nurses more broadly. In 2022, I decided to resign from my school nurse position, and I started exploring opportunities that would allow me to create more of a ripple effect, where empowering school nurses would, in turn, significantly impact the well-being and health outcomes of countless students. This exploration led me to stumble across a job posting for a content creator at MacGill School Nurse Supplies. While MacGill’s reputation as a premier school nurse supply company was well-established, their dedication to the profession ran far deeper than I could have ever imagined. MacGill’s vision for the content creator role resonated with my aspirations, reflecting a commitment to address the resource gaps and support deficiencies I had directly experienced as a school nurse.

Despite my lack of formal “content creation” credentials, MacGill saw beyond the résumé (tip: don’t think your resume has to align with a posted job perfectly – especially as a school nurse who thrives on adaptability and versatility!). They recognized that the most valuable content doesn’t always come from a polished portfolio but from the trenches of real-world experience. It was a refreshing embrace of the “it takes one to know one” philosophy, understanding that the best insights come from those who’ve been there, facing the daily realities of school nursing. It’s been almost three years now, and I can confidently say I’ve found the perfect intersection of my passions and expertise. In this role, I have the privilege of channeling my years of nursing knowledge, creative instincts, and life-long love of writing into what I hope is truly valuable content for school nurses – videos, blog posts, articles, newsletters, printed materials, and more

And so, as you continue this vital work of school nursing, remember that you are not alone. Communities like The Relentless School Nurse and MacGill School Nurse Supplies exist to celebrate your efforts, amplify your voices, and support you in navigating the challenges of this demanding profession. Together, we can push for the resources and recognition school nurses deserve while continuing to make an immeasurable impact on the lives of students and families.
