The Relentless School Nurse: Lifelines and Leaders – The Evolving Impact of School Nurses

School Nurses: The Relentless Lifelines in Our Schools

School nurses are the lifelines for students and families navigating the complexities of acute and chronic illness while pursuing an education. We are often the first responders when a student experiences a mental health crisis and the advocates pushing for resources that ensure equitable access to healthcare for every child. We provide direct care, yes—but we are also educators, advocates, and community builders. We are relentless in our pursuit of health and hope for every student who walks through our doors.

Today, I want to share what it means to be a Relentless School Nurse—and how, together, we can continue to transform student wellness, dismantle barriers, and inspire systemic change. Whether or not it’s your official title, remember: we are all the Chief Wellness Officers in our schools.

The Evolving Role of the School Nurse

School nursing has evolved. In 2025, we are public health leaders, mental health champions, and equity warriors. For many children, we are the only healthcare professional they see on a regular basis.

Our roles now extend far beyond the health office. We manage chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, navigate the surge in student mental health needs, coordinate care with families and outside providers, and respond to public health crises—from RSV outbreaks to COVID-19. In every way, we are the wellness backbone of our school communities.

But this expanded role comes with challenges: overwhelming caseloads, limited resources, and widespread misunderstandings about the depth and breadth of our work. That’s why advocacy is not just something we do—it’s who we are.

Stories of Impact: The Heart of School Nursing

Behind every school nurse is a story that affirms our purpose. Here’s one I’ll never forget.

A young student was newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. His family was overwhelmed—uncertain how to manage this life-altering diagnosis while juggling work and other responsibilities. Together, we created an individualized care plan that empowered the student to take charge of his health and helped his family feel supported and informed. Over time, I watched him transform from a scared little boy into a confident teenager who became his own best advocate.

This is the heart of school nursing. Whether it’s supporting a child through anxiety, helping them navigate chronic illness, or simply being a steady, trusted adult—they may not remember every lesson taught in the classroom, but they’ll remember the school nurse who stood by them when they needed it most.

Advocacy: Our Power to Influence Change

As school nurses, we are uniquely positioned to influence local, state, and national policies. Advocacy isn’t optional—it’s essential to creating schools where every child has access to quality healthcare.

Consider the push for improved nurse-to-student ratios. Research shows that having a full-time school nurse significantly improves student outcomes—both academically and medically. Yet, many schools still fall short due to budget limitations or a lack of understanding of our impact.

By sharing our stories, engaging with school boards, and partnering with organizations like the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), we can elevate our voices and drive the policy changes our students need and deserve.

Our advocacy extends beyond the school building—we connect families to food assistance programs, mental health resources, and community clinics. We are a bridge between health and education.

Practical Tips for Fellow School Nurses

To my fellow school nurses: here are a few ways to keep pushing forward with purpose:

  • Share Your Story: Your voice is powerful. Use it—on social media, in blogs, or at local events.

  • Speak Up for Resources: Be bold about what your school needs to support student health.

  • Build Relationships: Collaborate with teachers, families, administrators, and community partners. A strong network makes a stronger impact.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Being relentless doesn’t mean sacrificing yourself. Prioritize your well-being so you can continue to show up fully for others.
