The Relentless School Nurse: Philawell is Building Bridges of Hope in Madagascar

There are moments when we come across a story so deeply rooted in compassion that it leaves a lasting imprint. Philawell.org is one of those stories.

Philawell was founded by retired teacher Karen Cohen, whose first journey to Madagascar began as a healing adventure but soon became a turning point. Karen witnessed children eager to learn without even the most basic supplies, families without access to clean water, and communities that welcomed her with warmth and resilience despite facing profound daily challenges. Deeply affected by what she saw, Karen returned home with a clear resolve: to act. In March 2024, out of that spark of empathy and purpose, Philawell was born, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to supporting health, dignity, and education in Madagascar.

Founder’s Spotlight: Karen Cohen’s Journey

Karen spent over 30 years shaping lives in the classroom, but in Madagascar, she encountered a different kind of lesson. She saw children writing with broken pencils, studying barefoot, and walking miles for unsafe water. What struck her most was not what was missing, but the generosity of spirit of the Malagasy people. After leaving behind her own clothes and supplies, Karen returned to the U.S. with a deep determination to do more. Teaming up with local guides and friends, she began small, delivering flip-flops and backpacks to local schools, and quickly realized the pressing need for clean water and educational resources. She used her own retirement savings to fund Philawell’s first rain-sustainable well and, energized by the experience, set out to build more.

Savor Madagascar’s Finest Spices—And Support Philawell

A wonderfully delicious way to help is by purchasing Madagascar’s famed vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, or specialty ground spices (2.5-ounce jars). These products, cultivated in the island’s rich soil and tropical sun, connect supporters to Madagascar both in flavor and in purpose. Every purchase directly supports Philawell’s clean water projects, school supply drives, and community outreach, meaning your daily cooking can help change lives.  Email your order to the founder, Karen Cohen: philawell@yahoo.com, and submit payment by clicking the Donate Now link on the website. You will find several ways to support this community through the website!

  • 100% of proceeds from spice sales go directly to Philawell’s work in Madagascar.

  • Purchases fund the digging of clean water wells, supplying villages with safe drinking water.

  • Sales provide schoolchildren with clothing, toiletries, and the basic materials needed for learning, uplifting entire communities.

Meeting Essential Needs

Clean Water: Philawell brings safe wells to villages where children once spent hours fetching water instead of learning in school. Recent droughts have made these wells absolutely vital for daily life.

Clothing & Toiletries: A pair of flip-flops, a clean shirt, or eco-friendly soap can transform a child’s health, comfort, and self-esteem. Philawell’s supplies are often the very first gifts these children have ever received.

Schools & Supplies: Programs like The Bee School in Antananarivo now receive backpacks, pencils, and paper. These modest items become keys to unlocking potential and shaping a brighter future.

The Heart of Madagascar

Karen and all who support Philawell remain inspired by the resilience, kindness, and hope that fill the Malagasy communities—qualities that far surpass the hardships they face. Philawell’s mission is to honor that spirit with practical support: restoring dignity, possibility, and hope for years to come.

Join the Effort

Philawell is proof that everyday acts of kindness can have a ripple effect across continents. When vanilla sweetens your coffee or cinnamon flavors your baking, you can also be stirring hope for a child in Madagascar. Visit philawell.org to learn more, purchase spices, or make a donation. Every small gesture builds a bridge, linking kitchens and communities to the dreams and futures of children half a world away.
