The Relentless School Nurse: The Health of Democracy Is on the Line – Why Nurses Must Care About Gerrymandering

Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing electoral district boundaries to give an unfair advantage to one political party or group. By manipulating these lines, politicians can dilute the voting power of communities, often marginalizing voices based on race, ethnicity, or political perspective. This distortion of representation threatens the very foundation of democracy, and it has real consequences for public health and nursing.

Every day, nurses across hospitals, clinics, schools, and communities bear witness to the impact of inequities in care, access, and policy. As the most trusted profession in the nation, nurses understand that health is shaped by far more than medicine alone—it’s shaped by social justice, equity, and the policies that determine who gets heard and who is left behind.

This Thursday, November 20th, from 8 to 9 pm EST, Nurses For America (NFA), invites all nurses to join a vital conversation: “Democracy Dies When Gerrymandering Thrives.” Hosted virtually with expert advocate David Pepper, this event will explore how gerrymandering in states like Texas, California, and Ohio is reshaping voting rights and threatening fair representation.

Why should nursing care about these political maps? Gerrymandering directly influences which leaders control legislation affecting healthcare funding, access to vital services, workplace protections, and the public resources that keep our communities healthy. From mental health to immunizations, safe staffing to violence prevention, the policies we advocate for depend on a democracy that truly listens to all voices.

As nurses, our professional calling compels us to protect not only individual patients but the health of entire populations. Advocacy is at the heart of nursing—whether we’re educating families, shaping school policies, or fighting for systemic change. This issue is not separate from our mission; it is central to it.

This session will include a Q & A, giving you the chance to bring your questions and hear directly from a democracy defender committed to safeguarding our rights and futures.

Let’s show up united as nurses—persistent, informed, and bold. Our courage to engage beyond the bedside can strengthen the democracy that underpins every aspect of public health.

Because the health of our democracy is a nursing issue, too—and it demands our voice.
