Secure firearm storage is undeniably a critical school safety issue. As school nurses, we have a unique perspective on the health and safety of our students, and advocating for secure gun storage is an essential part of our role in protecting children.
School nurses witness firsthand the devastating impacts of gun violence on students, families, and communities. We treat physical wounds, provide emotional support, and help those left behind in the aftermath of tragedies. This frontline experience underscores the urgent need for action on gun safety.
Secure gun storage is a simple yet powerful way to prevent tragedies. When firearms are stored locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition, the risks of unintentional shootings, gun suicides, and unauthorized access by children are drastically reduced.
The End Family Fire initiative, a joint effort by Brady United and the Ad Council, highlights the urgency of this issue. They report that 8 children are injured or killed each day by “family fire” – shootings involving improperly stored or misused guns found in homes. This campaign introduces the term “family fire” to our national vocabulary, much like “secondhand smoke” did for tobacco control, aiming to drive social change and save lives.
As trusted sources of health information for families, school nurses are responsible for educating about all aspects of child safety, including firearm safety at home. By normalizing conversations about secure storage, we can help create a culture of responsible gun ownership that protects kids.
School nurses are often the first to identify students in crisis or spot warning signs. Promoting secure storage is a natural extension of our role in creating safe, healthy school environments. Schools that actively promote these practices and partner with organizations like Be SMART and End Family Fire have reported increased awareness among families and fewer gun-related incidents.

Students deserve to learn and grow in safe environments, both at school and at home. By working together – nurses, educators, parents, and community members – to prioritize secure gun storage, we can make a real difference in preventing family fire and keeping our kids safe.
