The Relentless School Nurse: Deadline Extended in Call for Stories About Ethical Dilemmas in School Nursing

Are you a school nurse with a story to tell? Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics has extended the deadline for school nurses to share personal experiences navigating the ethical dilemmas that arise in our vital role. Our insights can illuminate our unique challenges and impact on student health and well-being.  Our practice is unique, often misunderstood, and minimized. Here is an opportunity to set the record straight!

We want true, personal stories in a form that is interesting and easy to read. – Editor, Teresa Savage

Every day, school nurses across the country step into their health offices knowing their impact will extend far beyond the walls of their schools. We are caregivers, advocates, educators, and, at times, lifelines for students in need. Yet, the stories of school nurses—their challenges, triumphs, and unwavering dedication—often remain untold.

A Day in the Life of a School Nurse

For a school nurse, no two days are alike. One moment might involve administering medications to a student with epilepsy, and the next, calming an anxious child facing bullying. Balancing these responsibilities requires resilience and resourcefulness, as nurses often operate within constrained systems and limited resources.

Some days bring profound ethical dilemmas. Should a nurse break confidentiality to protect a student, or advocate against school policies that compromise health equity? These moments demand not just medical expertise but also a steadfast commitment to doing what’s right for students.

Why Stories Matter

The stories of school nurses deserve to be heard because they illuminate the complexity and significance of their roles. They can:

  • Challenge misconceptions: Highlighting that school nurses do much more than treat minor injuries.
  • Inspire action: Encouraging policy changes and increased support for school health programs.
  • Educate others: Providing insight into the intersection of healthcare and education.

An Opportunity to Speak Out

Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics is inviting school nurses to share their authentic experiences through a 300-word proposal and, eventually, a full story of 800-2000 words. This initiative will publish selected stories in print, with additional pieces available online.

Your Voice, Your Power

This call to action is a reminder that school nurses have a unique perspective that can shape conversations about public health, education, and social justice. Sharing these stories isn’t just about validation—it’s about fostering a collective understanding of the invaluable work done by school nurses every day.

For school nurses everywhere: your story matters. Now is the time to let it be heard.
